2016. I decided to do some home studio recordings. At that point it had been 8 years since my first record “Life Is Sweeter…” was released. I really didn’t know what to expect from any new recordings. My plan was to just record the best demo’s that I could. I would then figure out what the best songs were and go into a real studio and record them.
The first song that I recoded was “Married To Myself.” I had gotten some pretty good crunchy guitar sounds on that one. It took me a while to record because there was a learning curve. It had been years since I had made any kind of real home recordings. I finally released it in November of ’16 just to get some reaction. People were we digging it. I was pretty happy myself.
The next song I would take a crack at would be “Down To The Wire.” This was a song that I had co-written when I was a teenager. For years every time I’d watch a football game and the announcers would say this game is “Down to the Wire”, it would motivate me more and more to record it.
I got this one recorded and released in April of ’17. As you can see, it took almost 5 months after the first one to finish. Once again, the learning curve, and life. I would upload the songs one at a time to Youtube with a cover picture. That’s what I mean by releasing it.
The 3rd song that I would record would be “Backward.” This was a song that I’d written in 02’. I felt that it was a strong song because it has a lot of meaning to me. My mother actually came up with the tittle, and I alway thought that the message was timeless. I finished recording this one and released it December ’17.
At this point it took me a year to record just 3 songs. I started thinking about recording one, or two more and releasing an EP. I was also still contemplating choosing the best song and going into a real studio.
At this point I had moved out of my apartment in ChinaTown and moved to Brooklyn. I had a little bit more space so I decided to upgrade some studio equipment. I did have a neighbor that would complain a lot about the noise so I had to pick my times to be loud.
The 4th song that I would record was a song called “Jacquie.” This was the first song with my new recoding gear. There was another huge learning curve. I was getting really good sounds. I finally finished recording this song and released it in January of ’19. This was basically just over a year after my previous song.
The sound quality that I was getting was really improving and I was really contemplating releasing what I had as a 4 song EP.
Then I went through a breakup from a long relationship. I just buried myself into recording. I started on my 5th song “Models On Bikes.” This was a song that I’d written in ’10. It was an easy song and I always knew that It would be on my next record. It really kept me busy, and my head on straight during that emotional time. I released the song in May ’19.
With 5 songs under my belt, once again I was thinking, am I going to release an EP?
At this point I was very inspired to write. I had just gone through the breakup and felt that I couldn’t release a record without writing some new material.
Between May, and October ’19, I had written and recorded 3 songs. “Remember My Love”, “Take Your Pictures Down”, and “Miracle.”
I probably could’ve kept writing and recording but I needed to stop and put that part of my life behind me. This was a project that I had started on 3 years earlier. It was a lot of work considering I had also played all the instruments, recorded, and mixed everything.
On December 10th ’19, “Married To Myself” was released.
I’m very proud of this record. It has been well received. “Married To Myself”, “Down To The Wire”, and “Freakshow” from my first album, are played on a very prominent podcast as their featured music. “Miracle” hit #19 on the New Music Weekly charts. The podcast, and the radio air play is very helpful for me.
I’m very grateful for all of the support that I’ve gotten dating back to the first release in late ’16. People are really enjoying my music and that is all I really needed to happen.
Thank you to everybody for appreciating “Married To Myself.” Happy Anniversary.
