Going all in on Youtube

In May of this crazy year 2020, I started making more purpose driven videos on Youtube. Getting more focused on my videos was something that I wanted to do even before Covid-19 turned the world upside down.

I’d been posting video’s on Youtube since 2008 but I was just using the platform pretty much for video storage. This Wednesday will be my 24th consecutive week releasing a more purpose driven video.

Back in May, while surfing around on Youtube, I noticed a company called Think Media. They were offering a free course called The Youtube Influence Challenge. A three day course that would help you learn how to get focused with your video’s, and learn how to get them ranked on Youtube.

This looked very interesting to me. What else was I going to do? The world was shut down, and there was no work. I decided to take the challenge. After all, I really believed that there was a lot of power in video. I did want to take my video making to the next level.

I’m not talking about the technical aspects of making videos, which they also teach and is important, but more about the content, and how I release it into the world.

This free course offered three full days of learning. They basically call it the 7 R’s. Reverse Engineer, Research, Record, Release, Rocket, Review, and Repeat.

When the three day free course was up, like any good business, they offered a paid membership. This wasn’t cheap, especially at this time when money is very tight. I thought to myself, you know I’m really into this and I’m learning so much about the entire process of releasing video’s. I’m going to go for it. I made the investment in myself.

A big part of the course is being consistent. Getting narrow and focussed on what you’re trying to achieve, and pivot when you have too. Its been about 5 months now and I’m really enjoying the process. I’m releasing a new video every week.

I’d be lying to you if I said it wasn’t hard work. It takes hours and days to make one video. I’m still trying to find the right balance of performance, and teaching video’s. I have so many video idea’s. Choosing which video to make is hard. It takes a long time to make a video so you want to be as sure as you can that you’re making the right video.

The good news is, you learn from each one. There’s always the next one. The idea is to get 1% better with each upload.

I have a lot of experience playing music. I’m 50 years old now, and I’ve been playing since I’m 12. I really feel that I can help guitar players with the knowledge I have not only in playing guitar, but with my experience of playing in many musical situations. Perhaps I can teach guitarist how to not make the same mistakes I did. Help them with things nobody showed me that I had to learn the hard way.

“My mission on this channel is to help guitar players improve their playing, and take the necessary steps to become successful.” Thats my mission statement for now. I can always pivot, but it’s working.
