Robby Krieger and The Egg

It was June 10th, 2010. Albany, New York. I was in the hotel lobby with the Chubby Checker band getting ready to go do a soundcheck. All of a sudden I see this guy walk past me and I looked over at my bandmates and said “Do you know who that was? That was Robby Krieger, guitarist from The Doors!”

I seen him walk into the gift shop so I had to go over and say hello. I walked up to him and said hello, I’m a big fan. It’s so great to meet you. I asked him what brought him there to Albany? He said that he was playing a gig that night at The Egg. Strange name for a venue but very fitting. It’s shaped like an egg.

I told him that I was also playing that night with Chubby Checker in Riverfront park. He thought that was great that Chubby was also in town. He offered me tickets for the whole band for his show. I said yes of course.

Since we were also playing that night we would have to head over to The Egg pretty quickly after the Chubby show.

We got to The Egg with a handful of songs left in their set. I cant remember what the name of their band was at the time. They had been billed prior to that as The Doors of the 21st Century but they might’ve dropped that name before this night.

The show was great. Robby Krieger was on guitar, and Doors original Ray Manzarek was on the keys. Fronting the band was former Steelheart vocalist Miljenko Matijevic. On the bass was the legendary Phil Chen. Phil had played bass on many hit songs and had performed in the early days with Rod Stewart, and Jeff Beck. Unfortunately I can’t remember what the drummers name was but he was great and very cool.

After the show while the band was signing autographs, I thanked Robby for getting us into the show. Since we were all in the same hotel most of us went down to the bar for a few beers. The whole Doors band was there except for Robby and Ray.

In this pic from Left to right you see Garry Nutt (Bassist Chubby Checker, 80’s Rock Band Tangier) Phil Chen (Bassist The New Doors? Rod Stewart) Band Roadie, Me, above me is Michael Windish (Drummer Chubby Checker, Owner Operator of Windish Music & Productions) Band Roadie, (Drummer The New Doors?)

What a great time we had partying that night. Phil Chen told us a great story about when he came up with the bass line to the song “Do You Think I’m Sexy” from Rod Stewart. He called the triplet feel rhythm the “To The Dump” rhythm. To The Dump, To The Dump, To The Dump.

Every time I play that feel on the bass in the Disco band I think “To The Dump.” Such a great memory. Thanks for The Egg Robby.
